As a federal prisoner I did time behind the walls of United States penitentiaries (USP Atlanta, USP Terre Haute, USP Marion, USP Leavenworth), within the fence of medium-security federal correctional institutions (FCI Talladega, FCI Oxford), and minimum security in three different federal prison camps (FPC Terre Haute, FPC Leavenworth, FPC Oxford).
In 1987, while on a six-day furlough from Federal Prison Camp Oxford (FPC Oxford), I visited the Department of Sociology at the University ofWis- consin-Milwaukee (UW-Milwaukee) and asked to see the department chairperson, Professor Gregory Squires.

The journey traces my steps through some of America's most infamous prisons, institutions identified by their acronyms, including administrative detention maximums (ADXs), United States penitentiaries (USPs), federal correctional institutions (FCIs), federal prison camps (FPCs), federal medical centers (FMCs), federal detention centers (FDCs), metropolitan correctional centers (MCCs), and federal transfer centers (FTCs).
Federal prison camps (FPCs) are minimum-security facilities that are composed of dormitories, some with fences, some without, that may be satellites to a neighboring FCI or USP or may stand alone.
